HARARE — Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC kick-start their CAF Champions League campaign on Sunday when they face Eswatini champions Nsingizini Hotspurs at the National Sports Stadium, beginning what the club hopes will be a long run on the continent.

The 3pm encounter will be Scottland’s first taste of CAF Champions League football, but the club arrives with a squad whose experience and depth have raised expectations that it can compete beyond the preliminary round.

Scottland’s confidence is underpinned by a defence that has been among the country’s strongest this season. Goalkeeper Nelson Chadya has kept 20 clean sheets, providing the foundation for a side that has been difficult to break down.

The backline has also been strengthened by the return of Emmanuel Jalai from South Africa, with the former Dynamos captain settling into the Scottland side and producing encouraging performances. Jalai made his full Scottland debut in July after joining the club on loan.

But Scottland’s biggest advantage may be the concentration of international experience within their squad.

Knowledge Musona, Walter Musona, Peter Muduhwa and Khama Billiat bring extensive experience of Zimbabwe’s national team and top-level football, giving coach Norman Mapeza a core of players accustomed to pressure and high-stakes matches. Walter Musona, Muduhwa and Jalai have also been part of the current Warriors setup, while Knowledge Musona has returned to the national-team picture.

Mapeza himself understands the demands of African football. The former Zimbabwe international and Warriors coach has extensive experience at club and international level, while former Warriors captain Peter Ndlovu, who manages the team, adds another layer of football knowledge and continental experience.

That combination could prove important against Nsingizini.

Scottland are not simply relying on individual stars. Their strength lies in having experienced players in several positions, a goalkeeper enjoying an exceptional season, a defence that has developed considerable consistency and attacking players capable of changing a game.

For a club making its continental debut, that balance could be decisive.

Nsingizini, however, will provide a serious test. The Eswatini champions arrive with the same objective: to take a positive result from Harare and put themselves in a strong position for the return leg.

Scottland’s immediate task is therefore straightforward — make home advantage count, keep Nsingizini under pressure and take a lead into the second leg.

For Zimbabwean football, the match carries significance beyond Scottland. A strong continental campaign would provide a measure of the country’s current club strength while giving a new generation of players valuable exposure to African competition.

With Mapeza on the touchline, Ndlovu in management and a squad packed with Warriors experience, Scottland have the personnel to make their first CAF adventure more than a brief appearance.
