MASVINGO — The successful hosting of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Dzimbahwe World Tourism Expo has put Masvingo firmly in the tourism spotlight, bringing together exhibitors, international buyers, tourism businesses and visitors in a city whose tourism identity is anchored by the iconic Great Zimbabwe Monument.
Held from September 9 to 12, the expo provided more than a platform for Zimbabwe’s tourism products to be marketed to international markets. It also brought increased activity to businesses across Masvingo’s tourism value chain, including accommodation providers, restaurants, transport operators and other hospitality enterprises.
Among the local businesses that participated in the tourism showcase was Masvingo Downtown Lodge, which exhibited at the expo while also playing a practical role in accommodating visitors during the busy period.
For the lodge, Sanganai provided an opportunity to put its hospitality offering directly before tourism stakeholders while demonstrating the important role that local accommodation establishments play when a destination hosts major tourism events.

The 2026 Sanganai/Hlanganani/Dzimbahwe expo attracted a record 405 exhibitors and 153 buyers, according to reports following the event, highlighting the scale of the tourism activity brought to Masvingo.
The expo also showcased Masvingo itself as a tourism destination. Official expo material describes the city as a destination rich in culture, history and nature, with Great Zimbabwe providing a major anchor for the city’s tourism offering.
Beyond the expo, Masvingo’s tourism appeal rests on a combination of heritage, nature, culture and leisure. Great Zimbabwe, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that gave the country its name, remains the destination’s defining attraction, while the wider province offers access to Lake Mutirikwi and Kyle Recreational Park, Gonarezhou National Park, Tokwe-Mukosi Dam, Manyuchi Dam, Sikato Lion Park, Chamavara Caves, the Great Zimbabwe Museum, Masvingo Museum and the city’s golf course, among other attractions.

The concentration of tourism activity during Sanganai demonstrated how a major event can spread economic opportunities beyond the exhibition venue. Visitors require accommodation, meals, transport, conference facilities and other services, creating business for enterprises throughout the destination.
It was in this environment that Masvingo Downtown Lodge found itself serving both as a tourism exhibitor and as part of the city’s accommodation infrastructure.
Established in 2005, the lodge has built its business around accommodation, conferencing and food services. It has 12 rooms, comprising standard en-suite and non-en-suite rooms, while also offering self-catering facilities for guests who prefer to prepare their own meals.

The lodge’s participation in Sanganai therefore came at a significant moment for both the establishment and the destination it calls home.
For more than two decades, Masvingo Downtown Lodge has operated within a city increasingly positioning itself as a tourism centre rather than simply a stopover on the country’s southern tourism circuit.
Its vision is to become a preferred global brand in hospitality services, with a mission centred on delighting guests through distinctive and engaging experiences.
The lodge says its approach is founded on teamwork, enthusiasm, excellence, responsibility, honesty, hard work, determination and trust, values it sees as central to maintaining standards and delivering a positive guest experience.
Its conferencing, food, accommodation and self-catering services also give it a role beyond traditional leisure accommodation, allowing it to serve business travellers, conference delegates, event participants and other visitors to Masvingo.
As the city continues to attract major tourism events and increased visitor attention, establishments such as Masvingo Downtown Lodge are positioned at the point where destination promotion meets the actual visitor experience.
